Fundraising and construction began last fall to provide the community with the new sports facility that includes locker rooms, public restrooms, a trainer's room and concession area at Memorial Field, said Bob Lydon, President of the Sparta Gridiron Club. It will be used at Sparta High School football games as well as community events.
The Sparta High School Football Team plays Aquinas High School at 7 p.m. tonight (Friday, Sept. 7) at home. The Al Roberts Gridiron Club Fieldhouse will be open.
"The Sparta Area School District is very grateful to the members of the Gridiron Club for recognizing the need for these improvements to Memorial Field and for all of their work in making this project a reality. it is a beautiful building and an excellent addition to the football facility," Superintendent John Hendricks said.
The Sparta Gridiron Boosters raised money for the project and is looking for additional support through paver sales and further community support, Lydon said.
