The Sparta Area Chamber
of Commerce and Sparta Gridiron Club Fieldhouse will conduct a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at
10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 7, at the new Al Roberts Gridiron Club Fieldhouse at Memorial Field
in Sparta.
Arlene Roberts will
assist in the dedication of the building in memory of Al Roberts during this
ceremony. The community is welcome and encouraged to attend.
Fundraising and
construction began last fall to provide the community with the new sports facility
that includes locker rooms, public restrooms, a trainer’s room and concession
area at Memorial Field, said Bob Lydon, President of the Sparta Gridiron Club. It will be used during Sparta High School football games
as well as community events.
The Sparta High School
Football Team will play Aquinas High School at home Friday at 7 p.m. The Al
Roberts Gridiron Club Fieldhouse will be open.
“The Sparta Area School
District is very grateful to the members of the Gridiron Club for recognizing
the need for these improvements to Memorial Field and for all of their work in
making this project a reality. It is a beautiful building and an excellent
addition to the football facility,” Superintendent John Hendricks said.
The Sparta Gridiron
Boosters raised money for the project and is looking for further support
through paver sales and further community support, Lydon said.
